The Wait
As with any art form, crafting a still life is a creative act. Sometimes that means we start out with one idea and end in a very different place. That was the case here. I knew I wanted to see how the light shaped the table pedestal. I liked what the painterly backdrop added, but nothing seemed to work on the table. And then the light appeared. I only hoped I could find an object that made sense with the table before the light was gone. I found the pitcher, and then the flowers. Only later did I read the story—I made the connection. It describes me. Like the pitcher, I’m turned toward the light; it represents the thing I wait for. Whether it’s for my husband to come home from a long trip, or as a follower of Christ, I wait for his return. The pitcher looks a bit haughty which is troubling, but maybe it takes a story to reveal a little bit of truth.
